How do I read my meter and calculate my usage?

Read your meter

The meter dial is like the odometer on your car. It reads your water consumption and is a cumulative total of the water that has run through that meter since it was installed. You can get the consumption for a period of time by comparing the beginning reading to the ending reading. As water flows through the meter, the red hand rotates as it measures usage by the gallon. One revolution is equal to 10 gallons.Meter With Reading

  • The first 0 on the right is stationary.
  • The next two numbers with the black background represent tens and hundreds of gallons of water.
  • Since we only bill in 1,000-gallon increments the meter reader only reads the four digits to the far left (106). This reading is subtracted from your meter’s previous reading (by the billing software, not the meter reader) to calculate your consumption. The 740 gallons will carry over to the next month.

Calculate your usage

  • Record odometer reading (all numbers, including the stationery 0).
  • After a specific period of time re-read meter and subtract initial reading. The difference is your usage.
    • Note that we bill in 1,000-gallon increments.
