Silo Mural Project

Project Overview

The McKinney Silos Mural Project features the installation of a mural by artist Guido van Helten on the 100’ tall historic concrete silos and grain elevator in McKinney off of East Virginia and Main Streets. Van Helten is an internationally acclaimed Australian artist who creates oversized photorealism murals. His work is featured across the world and his designs are influenced by, and representative of, the communities in which they are created.

The silos serve as the backdrop for the city's new Municipal Community Complex which should break ground this fall. The public art project demonstrates one of the city’s goals for the new development: to preserve and celebrate the culture of the communities in the area.

About the Artist

Guido van Helten’s murals are painted with high-quality pigment paints in neutral colors chosen specifically to blend with the surface and bring out the existing industrial architecture of the structures. This approach ensures the artwork will weather well and complement the structure itself.

McKinney’s silos mural contributes to van Helten’s U.S. silo series, Monuments. These murals create a trail across the country with other public art installations in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Arkansas.

Public art expresses and supports a sense of neighborhood history, culture and identity. It also attracts visitors and helps drive economic vitality.
