Court: Jury Service

I received a Jury Summons what do I do now?

When you are called for jury duty, you will receive a Juror Summons postcard in the mail. To fill out your eligibility information, visit the Jury Portal.

All jury service takes place in person unless otherwise noted when you are advised of your service date. 

You will need to enter:

• The Summons ID # from your Summons postcard.
• Last Name
• Date of Birth

Action needed before the service date:

• Please review the Texas Uniform Jury Handbook
• Please review the COVID-19 Operating Plan including information for Vulnerable Populations
• Complete the prospective juror questionnaire through the Jury Portal
• Notify court staff if health and safety of juror is in question 
• Contact court staff if particular vulnerability to COVID-19 prior to service date
• Notify court staff if the juror has confirmed COVID-19 infection or exposure

Note: There will be no in-person court participants allowed if the participant:

• tested positive for COVID-19 within 10 days of service date.
• had symptoms of COVID-19 within the previous 10 days.
• was exposed to COVID-19 within the previous 14 days. 

If you believe you were exposed or currently have symptoms, please reschedule immediately by emailing the court.

Eligibility Criteria

• Be a citizen of the United States and of this state
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Reside in the county of your jury service
• Be able to read and write
• Be of sound mind
• Be a city resident

Disqualification Criteria

• You have been convicted of a felony or of any type of theft (unless rights have been restored)
• You are now on probation or deferred adjudication for a felony or for any type of theft
• You are now under indictment for a felony or are now under criminal charges for any type of theft

When You Can Be Excused

• When you are 75 years of age
• You have legal custody of a child 12 years or younger and jury service would require leaving the child without adequate supervision
• You are a student in class
• You are the primary caretaker of a person who is unable to care for him or herself
• You are a member of the United States military forces on active duty and deployed to a location away from home station and out of the country of residence

Why did I receive a Jury Summons?

The United States Constitution and the Texas Constitution guarantee all people, regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin or economic status, the right to trial by an impartial jury. Justice ultimately depends to a large measure upon the quality of the jurors who serve in our courts.

The process for selecting prospective jurors is mandated by State law. 

1. Each county receives a list of potential jurors from the Secretary of State that consists of individuals in the county that:
   1.  are registered to vote
   2. hold a Texas driver's license or identification card.
2. Individuals on the list are then randomly selected and mailed a summons.
