McKinney releases new population estimate

The City of McKinney has announced its annual population estimate of nearly 180,000 residents, a 6.8 percent increase from January 2017. According to city estimates, the population has increased nearly 365 percent during the last 20 years, from 38,700 in 1998 to 179,804 in 2018.

“While this unprecedented growth provides for a booming economy, we remain committed to maintaining the community feel that has brought so many of us to McKinney,” said City Manager Paul Grimes. “With high quality, impactful planning, we are building a balanced future for all residents and families, with better access to desirable and affordable neighborhoods, jobs, transit and parks that make McKinney unique.”

Last year, the city was named one of the fastest growing cities in the country according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

A number of high-profile development projects are in the works, further demonstrating the city’s exponential growth, including the construction of a retail development anchored by Costco as well as a nine-acre mixed-use development near downtown called Davis at the Square. The city and the McKinney Economic Development Corporation recently approved a Memo of Understanding with a development team led by KDC for the development of Southgate McKinney located at the interchange of the Sam Rayburn Tollway and U.S. 75. The city also approved a tax incentive plan for a $100 million upscale lifestyle hotel and conference center in Craig Ranch and Independent Bank recently began construction on its new corporate headquarters at the McKinney Corporate Center Craig Ranch.
