Road Access Plan

Road Access Plan

The FM 546 Replacement is a proposed four-lane (future six-lane) arterial roadway that will extend approximately 8,000 feet from SH 5 near Wilson Creek to the south end of Mckinney National Airport. The roadway is planned to relieve traffic on Industrial Boulevard and to improve access to the airport and adjacent properties. The proposed roadway is being designed to Texas Department of Transportation roadway standards and is planned to take the designation of FM 546 once constructed. This will result in portions of Industrial Boulevard that are currently designated as FM 546 reverting from the state to the city.
To meet TxDOT design requirements and to be eligible for State and Federal funding, a rigorous planning phase is necessary to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The City of McKinney hired a consultant in 2009 to identify an alignment for the new roadway and prepare a design schematic and environmental assessment. The consultant proposed several alignments that roughly parallel the Old Mill Road corridor and the city ultimately selected a technically preferred alignment in 2010. The consultant has since completed the design schematic and environmental assessment for the preferred alignment.

As of summer 2011, both the design schematic and the environmental assessment for the new roadway are being reviewed by TxDOT for compliance with applicable regulations. Assuming no unforeseen obstacles, the city expects to receive schematic approval and environmental clearance in spring 2012. At this time, no additional funding is allocated for either final design or construction of the new roadway.
